Keep Num Lock On when Windows 7 Starts

When Windows 7 operating system is installed on any desktop computer it has default configuration of keeping Num Lock off when the computer boots. This configuration might create a lot of confusion while entering passwords to log on to Windows. The reason behind this is that in most cases users keep complex passwords which contain a combination of any special character uppercase and lowercase and numeric digits. If as default nature of Windows 7 Num Lock is off users may keep on pressing the numbers on the num pad not even knowing that numbers are not getting typed. Administrators of these computers can edit the registry and configure Windows 7 machines to have Num Lock on by default when computers start. As an administrator you can do so by following the steps given below:

  1. Logon to Windows 7 computer with administrator account.

  2. In the search box at the bottom of start menu type REGEDIT and press enter key.

  3. On Registry Editor Window expand HKEY_USERS > .DEFAULT > KEYBOARD from the left pane.

  4. From the right pane right click on InitialKeyboardIndicators and from the list click on Modify.

  5. On Edit String box in Value data field replace existing 2147483648 value (which keeps Num Lock off when system starts) with 2value (which keeps Num Lock on when computer starts).

  6. Once done click on Ok button to save the changes and restart the computer.
