Sometimes, it’s much better to take the easy way out, and that’s what I usually try to do. Some call this laziness, I call it efficiency, but I have to admit that probably the truth is somewhere in between… and when it comes to the need to list folder contents, there’s only one path to follow: the easy one!

Sure, if you really want to make it like old school boys do, you could open a command prompt window and use the DIR command. It’s pretty flexible, and you can easily save the output to a text file using something like “DIR C:\Windows >listing.txt” and nothing more, but there are a bunch of attributes available to use with this command. To find out all there is to know about the DIR command and the attributes available, just type “DIR /?” or “help DIR” in a command prompt window and press Enter.

Good… Now let’s live that ugly command line aside and move to the little program I discovered earlier today, namely Dir Print, shall we?

I know this program is ridiculously simple, but maybe you just don’t need any flexibility for your folder listing tasks, and maybe you even hate the command line, so using this little piece of code could be the best solution for you. There’s nothing to install, nothing to setup, everything is located in the main window of the program, so even my grandma could use it without breaking a sweat!

Dir Print allows you to print or save the contents of a folder to a text file, and the only problem I noticed is that it doesn’t save any advanced data (creation date of a file/folder would have been nice), and it won’t go deeper into a folder than the first level, either… or maybe it was some hidden switch that I missed, but I don’t think so.

Anyway, if we draw the line, I am sure Dir Print can get a lot better, but even the way things are looking now, we have a useful tool for those who need to list folder contents just like that, without displaying the whole structure of subfolders and advanced file/folder data like attributes, creation date or size.

Oh, one more thing – this is not freeware, but donationware, so if you really think Dir Print is worth your attention, spare a few bucks and donate, will you?

I never managed to understand Zuma players, no matter how hard I tried. I even played that game for an hour or so, but still couldn’t figure out what’s so special about it. Probably that’s exactly what most people like about Zuma – its simplicity, and if this one won’t ever gain a place in my heart, Spheres Of Chaos, despite its obvious age, may just do that…

I usually hate quoting stuff, but this time, I think the official description should say it all, since I don’t know how else to say “A Pyschedelic (woot! this is how they put it on the official page, this is how I put it here…) arcade game,” and the screenshot above should also give you a clue. Basically, it’s like one of those many games that appeared in early 1990s where you were in charge of some kind of spaceship, and your task was to shoot incoming asteroids and/or avoid them. Pretty cool, huh?

To me, for a long time, the arcade genre was almost dead, but seeing games with ancient graphics and sound like Spheres Of Chaos that still manage to look great over a decade after their release makes me wonder if the gaming industry doesn’t need to return to its roots. Anyway, leaving these thoughts aside, I think that Zuma and Solitaire players should try and taste Spheres Of Chaos – this one leaves any thinking and planning aside and turns it all into a battle for survival!

I know, I know, if you go ahead and click for a Spheres Of Chaos download, this may not improve your productivity at all, but weekend is coming, and this freeware game works like a charm even on computers built before Windows 95 came along, not to mention that there are also versions for Linux, PS2 running Linux, or even the obscure Risc OS. Sure, you may face some problems on modern computers (I think movement was a bit strange on mine, for example), but if you really want to enjoy a psychedelic visual feast, hang on in there and destroy asteroids for a few minutes… Good luck!

“Free disk defragmenter for Windows? No way, there’s no such thing I can trust!” I guess you recognize these words… and if you never thought or said something like it, that’s even better! Speaking for myself, I used various commercial disk defragmenters for Windows in the late 90s and the first part of the current decade, until I discovered some free tool that was really capable of getting the job done properly, so I moved into the free disk defragmenters world. I don’t remember exactly the tool that made me discover this world, but today the time has come to play with one that I had in my sights for quite a while – Auslogics Disk Defrag.

First of all, let me tell you that this is not a software review, it’s just a hint with some screenshots and my impressions after using this program for a few hours. Sure, only a few hours for now, but I am sure I won’t remove this free disk defragmenter anytime soon, and if you wonder about the reasons, I’ll tell you right away!

If there’s something to say about Auslogics’ Disk Defrag really quick, I think three words should be enough: fast, free, and fast again, but it goes much deeper than that, believe me!

When I say “fast,” that even includes the download and setup parts, but since I told you already this is not a review, let me just tell you that I chose to analyze my hard drive, and after finding out that my boot partition was 30% fragmented, I decided to defragment it. After starting the operation, I got back to my browsing, and in about 10-15 minutes, I got back to Disk Defrag to check how where things going. My 25GB drive with over 23GB of data on it was already defragmented, and I am sure that this says it all…

… but if you really want to hear more, here’s a little hint: while Disk Defrag’s interface make it look like a very simple on-demand defragmenting tool for Windows, the serious stuff is located in the Settings window (just open the Settings menu and click on Program Settings… to access it).

What kind of goodies? Scheduled defragmenting, auto defrag (for example, if you go away from the computer for more than 10 minutes, the program can start the defragmentation process automatically), color themes… and it doesn’t stop here, but this is where I stop, so there you have it!

Auslogics Disk Defrag may not be the best free disk defragmenter for Windows, but it’s a damn good piece of code, and you shouldn’t skip trying it, no matter if you already use a commercial or free alternative to it. Give it a try, and you will be amazed, believe me. Good luck!

I don’t want to save the world, and if I could, I would do the same thing as you do with a drive that’s fragmented beyond any hope of recovery – format it! Anyway, if you’re the religious type, be glad that I am not God, but no matter if you believe in something or not, don’t waste food – eat it, because that’s why food exists, and I consider a huge shame that some people throw away in a day more than others eat in a month!

We’ll get to the computer software part right away, but let me tell you why I decided to write about a subject like this one…

A few weeks ago, I read an article about the quantity and value of food thrown away all over the United Kingdom. I don’t remember where I read it, I don’t remember the figures, but I surely remember I was absolutely shocked!

Last week, I managed to ruin two salads because I had some old cucumbers, especially since after finding about their bitter taste the hard way in first place, I peeled them nicely for the second salad, but didn’t get a much better result that time, either. In the end, I had to throw away the remaining cucumbers, fortunately there were only a few around…

… and since you already saw the screenshot and probably imagined what is this all about, the piece of code that could help you stop wasting food is here, suggestively called Waste Not. Finding your way around this Windows app is really easy, I think, especially because you only get one window and a few options to mess with, and if you find that the Help contents is missing, try visiting the About window… and then jump to the forum dedicated to this program!

Since using it is trivial, let me tell you what this program is: freeware, portable application, very easy to use, with the purpose of helping you track what’s inside your fridge, what’s not, and what you should eat as soon as possible, because expiration date is drawing near…

On the other hand, Waste Not is not a recipe manager, a complicated food stock management tool for restaurants, and not even a diet tool. Its purpose is to help people track stuff they have around and expiration dates to avoid wasting good products, that’s all!

Some may consider this program useless, but before putting it that way, ask yourself about the impact on the environment of any little piece of biological waste or not, and leave the monetary issues out of question. After all, you don’t want to leave your children a nice house and a fat bank account in a rotting world, am I right?

If I think well, virtually any forum on the Internet involving discussions about computers and software can’t avoid a topic about the best Internet browser, or at least one starting with a poll asking you about the browser you’re using. Now, this is nothing out of ordinary – there are also a lot of silly topics on every forum involving questions about sex, for example, but at least those can be really fun, while here, there’s only one answer that you should remember well: there’s no such thing as “best Internet browser,” all right?

Some time ago, I made the mistake to overlook the capabilities of a browser who was far from version 1.0, but some of my friends recommended as being one of those very strong newcomers, and I won’t do that mistake again. The newcomer I didn’t even try some time ago was Flock, now one of the browsers I use on a regular basis, and the one I won’t overlook today is Midori.

Simply described as “a lightweight web browser” on its homepage, Midori comes with all the features most Internet users need and – everyone pay attention here, please! – offers fast WebKit-based rendering and pretty smart resource management, making it an ideal choice to those who are tired already of looking for a browser that won’t expand to chew all available memory as soon as two-three tabs have been opened!

Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this browser to my mom, as I wouldn’t recommend my father to jump into a Corvette and drive away without attending some special driving courses for powerful rear-drive cars, either. Why am I saying this? Well, Midori for Windows is only labeled 0.1.8 for now, and is still far from perfect, as I was able to notice while playing with it.

Speaking about problems, let me tell you about a strange one – while it obtains 88/100 when running the Acid 3 Test, Midori fails in displaying Wikipedia’s home page properly! Even more, while I have the Adobe Flash Player installed and working properly, Midori won’t display Flash content, either. I am talking about the browser out of the box here, without touching any settings or adding any modules yet, so if you feel like playing with some early code, don’t be afraid and jump right in!

If you like to tune your browser, let me tell you that Midori currently supports user script, user styles, and it also has theme support, next to the things you’d expect from a decent browser anyway, like tabbed browsing and session management.

Obviously, this is a free Internet browser, and while it may be still far from being a very good one, I think Midori is one of those piece of code we should check on a regular basis, since you never know where the best Internet browser could be hiding! Oh, yeah – here’s one more thing you should know – this interesting piece of code is also available for Linux, so if you’re one of those using it, be sure to give it a try, I am sure your PC will love it, especially if it’s low on resources!

Having a clean Windows desktop can save somebody’s life one day, maybe even your life, and if you think I am joking, think about this: instead of missing your train and having to take a bus and then die in an accident, you will catch that train and arrive safely to the destination. That’s the difference between being organized and wasting time, that’s the difference between having a mess on your computer’s screen and having a clean Windows desktop!

Before moving on and telling you those few words you have to read about Deskcretary, let me confess something: I actually don’t have a desktop on my Windows computer! I know we talked about it before, but it’s always good to remember that, and if you missed that article, no problem – it’s here, so take your time to check it out.

If you decide to follow my suggestion from the article I just mentioned, I think you really don’t need to play with Deskcretary, but since I know that most Windows users have some items on their desktops, this program will surely make their lives easier and – as I was saying in the beginning – it could even save somebody’s life one day!

Considering the fact that I don’t have any desktop items to mess with, I will only go through Deskcretary’s features. I hope you don’t mind that, because this piece of code is one with a rather limited purpose, anyway, and that is to archive stuff you recently thrown on your desktop and to help you make some sense of it.

How’s that possible? Once you archive those items (a scheduling feature is present, don’t worry, as well as quick archiving via the menu showing up when you right click the system tray icon of the program), you can open the Deskcretary Explorer and go through your stuff, nicely ordered by date, type, or other criterion (you can even create an exclusion list so various items won’t be archived). Pretty cool, don’t you think?

Setting up your options is very easy, since you’ll have a wizzie by your side, so I think that, if you really need a clean Windows desktop, you can choose this way, or my way (the “no desktop” way I mentioned earlier), because despite the fact Deskcretary didn’t even reach version 1.0 yet, it looks like a pretty solid freebie to me. Sure, I may be wrong, but I am sure you’ll drop a comment to make things right, if this program doesn’t fulfill your expectations, right?

I don’t know about you, but I would rather stop eating for three days instead of having to reinstall Windows on my computer (currently, I use Windows XP and Vista Ultimate, but I spend most of my time using the good old XP, as most people I know do). Why am I saying this? Well, if I leave aside all those programs I am currently using and the restarts needed to install drivers… there’s something even more scary – Windows updates!

If you think Windows updates are not scary, just try to update the .NET Framework manually, and you’ll get the idea… after a few hotfixes! If I think well, I can say that updating the .NET framework in Windows XP is even more frustrating than using Windows Vista with User Account Control turned on, and I am not joking at all when I say it, unfortunately…

Now, considering all the above, wouldn’t be great to have an AIO file with those “must have” Windows updates? As long as it gets the job done, I don’t mind if it has a Chinese interface… but, fortunately, All in One Runtimes only seems to come in German. Trust me – you don’t have to know a single German word to use this updates package successfully – all you need is about 500 MB of free space on your Windows drive (or the temporary drive, if you messed with the Windows settings and set some folder on another partition to be used for storing temporary files) and 7-Zip to unpack the downloadable package you have chosen.

To make the last phrase of the previous paragraph clear as Bora Bora’s water, let me tell you there are two All in One Runtimes packages available, one for Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 x86, and one for Windows x64, including Windows 7.

The thing that makes All in One Runtimes worth downloading is the .NET Framework and all those countless hotfixes I was telling you about earlier, but there’s even more to this AIO package, since you’ll also get the latest DirectX 9.0c, Adobe Flash Player 10, Shockwave Player 11.5.0.596, Java Runtime Environment 6, Visual C++ Runtimes, an even Microsoft Silverlight 3.0! Installing them is as easy as possible; in fact, you can only unpack the executable package, and then do nothing! Go out and have a beer, then get back to your updated Windows OS – how cool’s that?

Finally, I should thank Raymond for discovering this software treasure. I really enjoy discovering things on my own, but this time I must give credits to the man, so… Thank you very much, Raymond!

Ever needed to split some large file? I am not talking about those times when you can easily create a multivolume archive, because sometimes you just don’t need a packer, and specialized file splitters can be faster than WinZip or WinRar when performing this task. For example, think about a 4GB ISO file that you need to burn on CDs, and you’ll get the idea (same thing goes for 5GB+ files that need to be placed on 4GB DVDs)…

While professional file splitters aren’t coming for free, today I found a program that can easily be called “professional,” but has a quality that commercial software won’t ever have: it’s absolutely free to download and use! Its name is GSplit, and comes all the way from France, being created by a company called G.D.G. Software.

Basically, a file splitter allows you take a large file and obtain a lot of smaller pieces, depending on the settings you have chosen. Sure, programs like Total Commander have this feature built in, but once you download and install GSplit, you can forget about those primitive tools after the first encounter!

What I love most about GSplit is that I can split large files, send them over to my friends, and then have them unite everything back without having to install the program, since this program also creates a tiny executable file that does all the hard work for them. Sweeeeet!

Additional features of the program include the ability to calculate/check the checksum of a file, unite existing parts if you didn’t create the executable file to handle that task, and… did I mention the Express mode? No, I missed that one, as I also missed telling you about the cool interface of the program (I am sure you saw the screenshots, anyway) or the ability to split multiple files, but I am sure you’ll discover them all by yourselves, if you’ll spend enough time with this piece of code.

Other than all the above… I think if you want to get one split large file, GSplit is one of the best choices. I wasn’t able to try it with really huge files, but the official page claims they can go above 4 GB. How much, that remains to be seen, but I really think that this free software for Windows (compatible with all Windows versions, including Vista, but no word about Windows 7 compatibility – maybe you can help with that one) deserves your attention, as I already said.

These being said, I leave you to fully enjoy another tasty piece of code, one that enforces once again one of those things I’ll always keep in mind: “Software is like sex: it’s better when it’s free!”

As storage space available to most PC users grows, so does the need to check for duplicate files, especially when your 1 TB drive seems to be full, and you only keep a few games and a lot of family photos on it. When I say “a lot of family photos,” you have no idea what that really means, at least in my case, believe me! Sure, this leads us to that point where we need the best tool to help us find duplicates, and if it’s a free one, that’s even better!

Obviously, there isn’t only one freeware program that can check for duplicate files, but I have just one here today, and its name is Duplicate File Finder. Coming from Auslogics, an Australian software company, this program is free and will remain this way, also coming without any adware or limitation. Best part of it, especially for those using some 64-bit Windows OS is Duplicate File Finder’s support for them, including Vista and Windows 7!

Once you download the 1.6 MB setup package and install the program, everything works as natural as having a beer (or two-three-four-and-so-on… I hope you’re not one of those against beer, and if you are, just think about anything else that’s natural to you, like breathing)! These being said, let’s go quickly through a duplicate files check session, shall we?

First, you have to select the drives/folders to check for duplicate files. I suggest that you select all your fixed drives, because it only took a few minutes to scan almost 800 GB of data, in my case.

Next, you should choose the program settings for the scan you’ll soon fire up, and my suggestion is to avoid selecting “Match contents(slower),” and the reason should be obvious.

After pressing the Scan button and seeing the results, you can select the duplicates you want to delete and press the Delete button. Ta-taaa! That’s all!

I don’t know what else there can be said about Duplicate File Finder, since this program is extremely straightforward, as you can see in the short walkthrough above. Since even my mother could easily use it, and it comes free from any charge, I think this piece of code will remain installed on my computer for a long time since now… and this is exactly what I suggest to those of you who have same duplicate files problem as I do.

I like people who keep the faith no matter what, but I also think you shouldn’t be faithful to any piece of code, because you could miss a lot, and Winamp/Windows Media Player vs. the world is a good example. This time, I won’t get that far, but we’ll talk about something even more popular than the audio/video player, and that is the PDF reader…

… that system utility one can’t live without, especially since any document you can think of comes in this format (for example, I got a CD with some video tutorials and a PDF manual for a hair cutter!). Unfortunately, most PDF manuals coming on some CD/DVD also have Adobe Reader with them, and most unexperienced computer users will install that one and live happily ever after… or not!

Why not? The answer is very simple – it’s natural to always look for a better job, a better house, and even better software tools, in this case. Some may say it’s good to settle down, but I say it’s just human nature, and nothing more. If it wouldn’t have been this way, we would probably still live in caves… but let’s get back to our PDF reader now, shall we?

For a pretty long time, I used Adobe Reader without even trying to find a replacement. After all, why replace it? It’s free, it has all the features I need… but with some of the latest versions, I also noticed that this tool starts to “eat” more and more system resources, so discovering Foxit Reader was simply a natural step forward. Now, the time has come for PDF-XChange Viewer, a PDF reader that seems to be at the next level…

… but let me tell you only this: PDF-XChange Viewer is available for all popular Windows platforms, including the 64 bit ones, you can even get a portable version (exactly the one I currently play with), and if you really need features like extract/delete pages or document signing, then you will have to purchase a license. Other than that, this program is an excellent PDF reader with all the features one needs to enjoy some PDF files.

The free PDF-XChange Viewer comes with a lot of useful features, and I will only mention the ability to export PDF pages to image files (A LOT of formats supported!), multilanguage availability, improved JPEG2000 support, a full JavaScript engine, or text extraction. Sure, this is only the tip of the iceberg, but I just can’t tell you anything else.

I know the last phrase above may be strange, so let me explain – I didn’t sign any NDA with the company behind this product, it’s only the fact that I really have to play with PDF-XChange Viewer some more, maybe I’ll take another step forward and leave Foxit Reader behind. My final advice is to go ahead and try it for yourselves, it never hurts to have a good PDF reader around!
