How to Change Drive Letter of Any Fixed or Removable Drive in Windows 7?

There might be times when you need to change the drive letter of a partition in your computer. The situations might include non-sequenced drive letters irrelevant drive letter assignment due to any reason etc. Below are the steps using which you can assign change or remove a drive letter on your Windows 7 computer.

  1. Click on Start button.
  2. From the start menu right click on Computer and click on Manage.
  3. From the Computer Management snap-in in the left pane select Disk Management.
  4. From the right pane right click on the partition for which you want to change the drive letter and select Change Drive Letter and Paths button.
  5. On the opened box click on Change button.
  6. From the Change Drive Letter or Path box select appropriate character from the drop-down list opposite to Assign the following drive letter radio button.
  7. Click on Ok button on all windows to accept and confirm you configuration.

Versatility

By following the above process you can also modify the letters assigned to CD/DVD ROM Drives USB Flash Drives etc.

Limitations

You cannot change drive letters of System Drives or boot partitions using this method.

Best Practices

If you are installing Windows on a bare metal machine (new hard disk with no Operating System installed on it) you should create only one partition of the size of your choice and leave rest of the hard disk space unallocated. After Windows is installed you can change the default CD/DVD drive letter from D: to something else. After this you should start creating other partitions on your hard disk drive. If you have executed this in a planned way you will notice that after you have created all the partitions your drive letter assigned to CD/DVD drive comes in the last. ((For example C: D: and E: for primary partition and logical drives and F: for CD/DVD drive.)
