In Windows 7 taskbar is by default locked and because of this users are unable to modify its size or location. Microsoft has designed this feature so that users can get a static ambience and to protect the configuration from getting disturbed because of mishandling. However in some cases this feature may make users feel suffocated because of its limitation. Microsoft understands this and therefore it offers a complete control of this feature to the users. Users can now lock or unlock the taskbar according to their requirements. In other words when the taskbar is unlocked it can be resized or moved to a different location whereas when it is locked it becomes unchangeable. Since this configuration is user specific users can adjust their taskbar nature according to their choices. If you want to unlock your taskbar to be able to modify it you need to follow the steps given below:

  1. Logon to the computer with the account for which you want to modify the taskbar.
  2. On the desktop screen right click on the taskbar and from the menu click on Properties.
  3. On Taskbar and Start Menu Properties box uncheck Lock the taskbar checkbox.
  4. Click on Ok button to accept your latest configuration.

You can now resize and/or change the location of your taskbar. Once you are convinced with the modifications you have made you can reverse the above process to relock the taskbar.
