When you install Windows 7 on a computer it works quite well because of its new file system and fresh registry keys. As the time passes by and Windows gets mature its performance reduces because of several entries in its registry. In other words the more applications are installed on a Windows 7 computer the slower it will perform. In most cases you experience reduced performance due to consumption of memory and processor by non-essential applications. Also there might be times when you uninstall the unwanted applications but still because of the orphan entries in the Windows registry you experience slow speed. As per the recommendations if you find that your average processing speed is above 25% to 30% this simply means that something is wrong with your operating system and it requires formatting and reinstallation. You can monitor your CPU and memory usage by following the steps given below:

  1. Logon to the computer with any account (any user can see the performance of the CPU and memory without any elevated permissions).
  2. On the desktop screen right click on the taskbar and from the menu click on Start Task Manager.
  3. On Windows Task Manager box go to Performance tab to view the graphical presentation of the CPU and memory usage. CPU usage percentage can also be seen in the status bar of Windows Task Manager box.
  4. Once viewed carefully close Windows Task Manager and take appropriate action to solve the issue.
