One of the biggest challenges with the release of Microsoft office 2007 and Microsoft Office 2010 is that the default file extensions used by these packages (.DOCX) are not backward compatible and the files with these extensions cannot be used in legacy versions of the application. Because of this very reason users are forced to save the documents created in the above packages in Microsoft office 97-2003 file formats which used to have the default extension of .DOC. However many people do not know that Windows 7 itself provides the facility to the users using which they can view and edit the documents that have .DOCX file extensions even if they do not have Microsoft Office package (any version) installed on their computers. As a Windows 7 user if you want to view such files you are required to follow the steps given below:

  1. Logon to Windows 7 computer with any account and make sure that Microsoft Office 2007/Microsoft Office 2000 and package are not installed on it.

  2. Locate the file that has .DOCX extension.

  3. Right click on the file and from the available menu point the mouse to Open with option.

  4. From the appeared submenu click on WordPad to open the document in WordPad.

  5. You can modify the document as per piece and can save it as well.
